This is why reading motivational quotes on Instagram and Facebook when we have no one to talk to is very simple, but finding the right motivation to change your life, change jobs, get out of a relationship, learn new skills or anything can be much harder than it looks. Benefit: Finally, describe the advantages and gains that adop- tion of your proposed solution will yield.Īgain, you will find out how to access additional resources for "Think Faster, Talk Smarter" in Appendix 2 of the book. I will change and add to these resources periodically. When we talk about motivation we think it is as simple as eating a piece of cake. Solution: Second, present a fix to the problem, spelling out the specific steps, process/product, or method for remedying the problem. Problem: First, define a challenge, issue, or pain point that you are addressing, one that your audience shares. A structure can also help to ensure that our spontaneous pitch is logical and consistent with what we’re learning about others and their needs. Problem - Solution - Benefit is a very useful in-the-moment way to influence others to your point of view. It is one thing to prepare a stellar speech ahead of time it is another to be able to adapt our pitches on the fly to reflect what we’re discovering about our audiences and their needs. Having a structure to fall back on frees us to pay more attention and adjust in real time. We may want colleagues to agree with our ideas, our customers to buy products we’re selling, our love interests to agree to go out with us on first dates, our children to modify their behavior and respect our rules, and our neighbors to keep their dogs off our lawns. We want to influence them to see the world as we do or to act in a way we believe is best for them. When engaging spontaneously with others, we often hope to do more than simply inform them of our thoughts, ideas, and opinions. This infographic by Drawify is one of those. In the second part of my new book "Think Faster, Talk Smarter," I provide guidance for six common spontaneous speaking situations. Those who buy the book, get access to additional resources (infographics, videos, articles, etc.) via a QR code. This week we have a special Think Fast, Talk Smart The Podcast episode that comes from my "Think Faster, Talk Smarter" audiobook. They seek out variety-takes that might be more creative, unique, or imaginative. They do this not because any one take is right or wrong, but because the director and crew want to broaden their options and make sure they didn’t miss any potentially great but unforeseen ways of rendering the scene. When a crew films a scene, they will often do several versions or “takes.” They might do a close-up instead of a distant shot, have the actors stand instead of sit, have them modulate their tone, and so on. I find it helpful to envision mistakes as “missed takes” in the making of a film. Stressing over every little mistake we make-or might make-is mentally taxing and interfering. Make "missed takes." We can dial down our destructive judging and evaluation that occurs when we communicate on the spot by making a choice to practice accepting and even embracing mistakes.
